Design Solutions for Organizational Complexity26% · 5 topics
Learn to design network connectivity, security controls, reliability, multi-account environments and cost visibility for complex organizations.
1.1Design a network connectivity strategy
1.1 Design network connectivity strategies.
Concept
Large organizations connect many VPCs, VPNs and Direct Connect with Transit Gateway as the hub, and separate paths with route tables (splitting production and development, routing through an inspection VPC and so on). For name resolution with on-premises, use Route 53 Resolver inbound and outbound endpoints; to expose services, use PrivateLink (which works even with overlapping CIDRs). Follow the Direct Connect resiliency recommendations (multiple locations, multiple connections).
How it works / steps
- Plan VPC CIDRs so they do not overlap (use PrivateLink where they do)
- Separate paths per environment with Transit Gateway route tables
- Make Direct Connect redundant across two locations and add Site-to-Site VPN as a backup
- Resolve names in both directions with on-premises using Route 53 Resolver endpoints and rules
- Share common networking with other accounts through RAM (Resource Access Manager)
Workplace example
Consolidate 200 VPCs on Transit Gateway and send all outbound traffic through Network Firewall in an inspection VPC. Resolve the internal on-premises domain with outbound endpoint forwarding rules.
Common confusions and exam tips
- VPC peering is not transitive and becomes hard to manage as the number grows
- Maximum Direct Connect resiliency means two connections at each of separate locations
- PrivateLink exposes a specific service; it does not connect whole VPCs
Mini quiz
Q1. You want to send a large number of files from on-premises servers to S3 over Direct Connect without going through the internet. Which configuration is most appropriate?
- Create an S3 gateway VPC endpoint and point to it from the on-premises router's route table
- Create a NAT gateway in the VPC and send on-premises traffic over Direct Connect to the NAT gateway
- Create an S3 interface VPC endpoint and connect to it from on-premises over Direct Connect
- Assign public IPs to the on-premises servers and send to the S3 public endpoint over the internet
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C Create an S3 interface VPC endpoint and connect to it from on-premises over Direct Connect
Gateway endpoints can only be used through route tables inside the VPC and cannot be reached from on-premises. To use one from on-premises, use an interface endpoint with private IPs over Direct Connect or VPN.
Q2. VPC A and VPC B are attached to a Transit Gateway, and routes for both are propagated to the Transit Gateway route table. However, EC2 in A cannot reach EC2 in B. What is the most appropriate thing to check next?
- Whether appliance mode is enabled on the Transit Gateway attachments
- Whether static routes are also added to the Transit Gateway route table
- Whether DNS resolution and DNS hostnames are enabled in VPCs A and B
- Whether A's and B's subnet route tables route the peer CIDR to the Transit Gateway
Show answer and explanation
Answer: D Whether A's and B's subnet route tables route the peer CIDR to the Transit Gateway
Besides routes on the Transit Gateway, each VPC's subnet route tables also need a route sending the other's CIDR to the Transit Gateway. Then check security groups and network ACLs. [Other options] Appliance mode is for inspection appliance paths. Routes are already propagated, so static routes aren't needed. DNS settings don't affect traffic by IP address.

1.2Prescribe security controls
1.2 Prescribe security controls.
Concept
Organizational security controls combine prevention (SCPs, RCPs, IAM, permissions boundaries), detection (GuardDuty, Security Hub, Config, an organization CloudTrail trail) and response (EventBridge and automatic remediation). SCPs set the maximum permissions for principals (IAM users and roles), and RCPs (resource control policies) set the maximum access to resources, organization-wide. Manage security services centrally from a delegated administrator account.
How it works / steps
- Set up dedicated security and log accounts
- Configure delegated administrators for GuardDuty, Security Hub and Config, and enable them automatically in all accounts
- Prohibit dangerous actions with SCPs and restrict access to resources from outside the organization with RCPs
- Cap the permissions of roles developers create with permissions boundaries
- Connect findings to automatic remediation with EventBridge
Workplace example
Set an RCP so principals outside the organization cannot access S3 buckets, and use an SCP to prohibit disabling GuardDuty in any account.
Common confusions and exam tips
- SCPs do not apply to the management account
- RCPs restrict access to resources; SCPs restrict access from principals
- Permissions boundaries apply per IAM entity; SCPs per account or OU
Mini quiz
Q1. You are reviewing the OU structure in AWS Organizations. Which approach best follows AWS recommendations?
- Group accounts with similar governance needs, such as security, infrastructure and workloads (prod/dev), into the same OU
- Mirror the company org chart in OUs and move OUs and accounts at every reorganization
- Put all accounts in one OU and attach SCPs to each account individually
- Put prod and dev workloads in one account and create no OUs to limit accounts
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A Group accounts with similar governance needs, such as security, infrastructure and workloads (prod/dev), into the same OU
OUs are the unit for applying policies, so separate them by governance requirements (production, development, security and so on) rather than the org chart. You then do not need to move OUs on every reorganization.
Q2. Which statement about service control policies (SCPs) is incorrect?
- Actions explicitly denied by an SCP cannot be performed even if allowed by IAM policies in the member account
- SCPs do not apply to users and roles in the management account
- Actions allowed by an SCP can be performed by account users even if no IAM policy allows them
- SCPs also apply to the root user of member accounts
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C Actions allowed by an SCP can be performed by account users even if no IAM policy allows them
SCPs only set the maximum permissions and do not grant permissions. To actually perform an action, it must also be allowed by an IAM policy or similar.

1.3Design reliable and resilient architectures
1.3 Design reliable and resilient architectures.
Concept
Design an organization's critical systems with a DR strategy suited to RTO and RPO (backup and restore, pilot light, warm standby, multi-site) and cross-Region replication (Aurora Global Database, DynamoDB global tables, S3 Cross-Region Replication). AWS Elastic Disaster Recovery continuously replicates servers, achieving a short RPO at low cost.
How it works / steps
- Set RTO and RPO for each system and classify by criticality
- Choose a DR strategy matching each criticality
- Continuously replicate data between Regions
- Control switchover with Route 53 ARC (Application Recovery Controller) or similar
- Run DR drills regularly
Workplace example
Continuously replicate 50 critical on-premises servers to AWS with Elastic Disaster Recovery, launching them within minutes in a disaster. Normally, only a lightweight staging area runs.
Common confusions and exam tips
- Elastic Disaster Recovery costs only the staging area; production capacity is launched at recovery
- Global Database secondaries are read-only (promoted on switchover)
- DR procedures that are never drilled may not actually work
Mini quiz
Q1. Which statement about VPC peering is incorrect?
- After creating a peering connection, you must add routes to both route tables
- If A peers with B and B peers with C, A can communicate with C through B
- VPCs with overlapping CIDRs cannot be peered
- You can peer with VPCs in different Regions and different accounts
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B If A peers with B and B peers with C, A can communicate with C through B
VPC peering does not support transitive routing. To let A and C communicate, peer A and C directly or use Transit Gateway.
Q2. You want to ensure that CIDRs for new VPCs in all group accounts do not overlap with on-premises or other VPCs. Which method has the least operational overhead?
- Create address pools in IPAM, allocate CIDRs to organization accounts and monitor for overlaps
- Record CIDRs in use in a shared spreadsheet, and have whoever creates a VPC check and fill it in manually
- Use the same 10.0.0.0/16 for all VPCs and translate with NAT when they overlap
- Let each account's administrator choose CIDRs freely and recreate VPCs later if they overlap
Show answer and explanation
Answer: A Create address pools in IPAM, allocate CIDRs to organization accounts and monitor for overlaps
IPAM automates planning, allocation and monitoring of IP addresses across the organization. Manual ledgers are prone to errors and missed updates.

1.4Design a multi-account AWS environment
1.4 Design a multi-account AWS environment.
Concept
For multi-account, classify accounts with AWS Organizations OUs (organizational units) — security, infrastructure, workloads, sandbox and so on — and automatically build a landing zone with AWS Control Tower (log archive and audit accounts, controls (guardrails), Account Factory). Provide human access with IAM Identity Center and share resources with RAM.
How it works / steps
- Design the OU structure by purpose and applicable policies
- Create a landing zone with Control Tower and separate log and audit accounts
- Enable preventive and detective controls per OU
- Vend new accounts with standard settings through Account Factory (or AFT)
- Manage per-account access with IAM Identity Center permission sets
Workplace example
When a new project account is vended through Account Factory, CloudTrail, Config and networking are configured automatically and the development OU's guardrails are applied.
Common confusions and exam tips
- Putting everything in one account makes separating permissions, costs and failures hard
- Control Tower controls are implemented as SCPs and Config rules
- Do not put workloads in the management account
Mini quiz
Q1. You want to store API activity records for all accounts in the organization in one place for a long time, in tamper-proof form. Which configuration is most appropriate?
- Store them in an S3 bucket in the production account and let all employees read the logs through the bucket policy for transparency
- Have each account administrator download CloudTrail event history as CSV every month and put it in a head-office shared folder by date
- Create a separate CloudTrail trail in each account and store logs in each account's own S3 bucket
- Create an organization CloudTrail trail and store logs in an S3 bucket in a log archive account with Object Lock enabled
Show answer and explanation
Answer: D Create an organization CloudTrail trail and store logs in an S3 bucket in a log archive account with Object Lock enabled
An organization trail aggregates events from all accounts into one S3 bucket. Isolate it in a dedicated log account and prevent deletion or overwriting with Object Lock.
Q2. Employees authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID. You want to manage access to all accounts with employee identities and automate onboarding and offboarding. Which method is most appropriate?
- Ask employees at onboarding to set the same password on their IAM user as their Entra ID password
- Create one shared IAM user per department, share the password within the department and change it periodically
- Set Entra ID as the identity source for IAM Identity Center and automatically sync users and groups with SCIM
- Create an IAM user per employee in each account and delete them manually when HR reports a departure
Show answer and explanation
Answer: C Set Entra ID as the identity source for IAM Identity Center and automatically sync users and groups with SCIM
Using an external IdP as the identity source lets employees sign in with corporate identities, and SCIM automatic provisioning reflects joiners and leavers immediately.

1.5Determine cost optimization and visibility strategies
1.5 Determine cost optimization and visibility strategies.
Concept
For organization-wide cost visibility, use consolidated billing, cost allocation tags (standardized with tag policies), AWS Cost Categories (classifying costs by rules such as department or product), and the Cost and Usage Report (CUR) analyzed with Athena and QuickSight. Savings Plans and Reserved Instance discounts are shared in the organization, and AWS Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection detect overruns and anomalies.
How it works / steps
- Define tag standards (cost-center, env and so on) and enforce them with tag policies
- Define per-department costs from accounts and tags with Cost Categories
- Export CUR to S3 and analyze it with Athena and QuickSight
- Purchase Savings Plans in the management account and share them in the organization (restrict sharing if needed)
- Notify with Budgets and Cost Anomaly Detection
Workplace example
To allocate AWS costs to each business unit monthly, define Cost Categories with account and tag rules and share a QuickSight dashboard with each division head.
Common confusions and exam tips
- Tags are not applied retroactively to costs incurred before tagging
- Cost Categories can apply rules to existing data too (a difference from tags)
- Discount sharing can be turned off in billing preferences
Mini quiz
Q1. All accounts are now under Control Tower management. What should you do next to start cost allocation by business unit?
- Mechanically apportion group-wide costs by each company's sales ratio
- Standardize tagging with tag policies and activate cost allocation tags
- Merge all company accounts into one, eliminating business unit distinctions altogether
- Have Accounting manually transcribe each company's invoice PDFs into a spreadsheet every month
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B Standardize tagging with tag policies and activate cost allocation tags
To use tags for cost aggregation, standardize how they are applied and activate them as cost allocation tags. Then aggregate by business unit with Cost Categories or Cost Explorer.
Q2. You are designing organization-wide guardrails. You want to prevent anyone in member accounts, including users with administrator permissions, from stopping or deleting CloudTrail trails. Which mechanism is the most suitable?
- Resource control policy (RCP)
- Service control policy (SCP)
- Organizations tag policy
- IAM permissions boundary
Show answer and explanation
Answer: B Service control policy (SCP)
SCPs set the maximum actions that IAM users and roles (including the root user) in member accounts can perform. A deny takes precedence over IAM policy allows.
